The book was published in snd, right on the heels of the Civil Rights Era, so I found it so terribly convenient that Brandon and several of the other white characters were such forward thinking people as to be opposed to slavery, in spite of the setting in South Carolina in Both the power and pleasure of The Flame and the Flower are rooted in its retelling of the primal myths that reside in e.woodiwis collective unconsciousness.

Also having this happen right after the aunt’s brother tried to rape Heather makes it somehow seem that just because Brandon is attractive and the other guy wasn’t it was OK.
